In 1950, the Chamber of Commerce chose the same name for the city and it was made official soon after. By 1960s, the city's residential districts expanded fast and included housing for Boeing employees and executives of the Weyerhaeuser Company. This large population boost resulted in tremendous growth for the retail and service industries and the consequent economic success for the area. By the 1980s, Federal Way had established itself as an important community Washington.
