Although the Kitanemuk Indians were the main inhabitants of the area prior to colonization, it is believed that a lot more tribes were living in the region as well.
Post-colonization, two small communities were established in the area. The location was ideal because it was a crossroad between two commonly used routes. The two original communities were called Harold and Palmenthal. These new communities depended mainly on agriculture to survive so when a drought came, most of the families established a new community near the southern pacific railroad tracks. This new community was called Palmdale.
