Mexico and Spain both had control of the area before the Mexican American War, when the United States took control. Mormons made a settlement in the region in 1878 and the city of Mesa was officially incorporated in 1930. Military establishments, including Falcon Field Airport and Williams Air Force Base, were built at the beginning of World War II to train additional troops. After the war, many troops stayed in Mesa which resulted in a large population boom. The city has continued to prosper in the second half of the 20th century and is today one of the fastest growing cities in the United States.
