Carrollton was probably named after its namesake in Illinois, from where a number of it early pioneers arrived around 1842. They were mainly English stock, and so the colony made its livelihood from agriculture which supported the local community until the arrival of the Dallas – Wichita Railroad in 1878. The railroad brought with it new opportunities for the industrial sector, and these were further enhanced with the construction of additional rail networks to Denton and other destinations. 1913 saw the official incorporation of Carrollton and soon a new gravel industry developed which transformed the City's economic direction to the extent that it became known as the "grain and gravel" town. The post World War II era saw Carrollton expand rapidly with the arrival of more new industries, and by the early 1970s suburban development started reaching out towards North Dallas. The growth of the population increased 193 percent in 1980 over 1970 numbers to 40,600 inhabitants. A more recent census saw that number climb to nearly 122,000 residents.
