History:
In the 19th century the town was part of the Town of Newtown. The nearby area of Winfield was incorporated with Woodside and so the distinction between Winfield and Woodside was largely lost. In the early 1930s, more than 80 percent of the population was estimated to be Irish. Asian families began arriving in the area in the early 1990s. By 2000, more than 30 percent of the population was Asian. Though the town now has a very diverse ethnic community which includes many Koreans, Filipinos, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis and people from Ecuador, Mexico and Puerto Rico, the Irish American is still very prominent in the area.
Tourism:
Woodside features a very culturally diverse environment. Many festivals are celebrated here with a lot of enthusiasm. These celebrations bring in many people from New York for tourism. Woodside is also the only city that allows Gay and Lesbian communities to participate in the St. Patrick's Day parade. The parade has attracted politicians like Rudolph Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg, Jason West, Joseph Crowley, Hillary Clinton and many others. A number of good hotels operate in the area including Howard Johnson Express Inn, Holiday Express and Quality Inn. Woodside is also famous for the wide variety of restaurants in the city. The range includes Asian, European and South American Cuisine. Woodside is also a famous route among urban cyclists and local parkour enthusiasts.
