New Haven was officially incorporated in 1784. Around this time, Eli Whitney, a Yale graduate, developed the cotton gin and a mass production gun factory.
The city grew substantially during the Civil War because of heavy immigration to the area and the need to provide supplies to the troops. The city continued to grow until around World War II, at which point people started to move out to the suburbs. This decline continued through most of the later 20th century. Today, New Haven is focused on improving the city.
