Origin of State's Name: Utah originates from the Apache Indian word yuttahih, which means "one that is higher up." Europeans thought the word referred to Indians living higher in the mountains than the Navajo; the territory became known as the land of the Utes, and eventually Utah.

State Tree: Utah designated the blue spruce as the official state tree in 1933. Generally silvery blue in color, blue spruce has the ability to withstand temperature extremes.
State Flower: Chosen as the flower symbol of Utah because of its natural beauty and historic significance, Utah designated the sego lily as the official state flower in 1911.
