History:
Although founded in 1869, Bellevue was only incorporated in 1953. Prior to 1940 it had been a typical rural backwater because transportation was a problem, but the building of the Lake Washington Floating Bridge changed all that and the quiet town suddenly sprang into life, albeit as a bedroom community for Seattle. Then in 1963 the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge was commissioned and Bellevue began growing into a modern City in its own right. With improved access it started attracting a significant business community, and then came the Bellevue Square Shopping Center which was one of the biggest in the region at the time of opening in 1946. Bellevue continued to expand after World War II and right through to the 1980s. Today, the city continues to grow through the Bel-Red Corridor project (a joint effort with neighboring Redmond) aimed at redeveloping a large portion of the areas to the north.
Economy:
Capitalizing on its close proximity to neighboring Redmond, home of Microsoft, and with direct access to Seattle through two main highways, Bellevue has attracted many small and larger businesses many from the high-tech Information Technology sector.
