Bakersfield, California is located in the southern central part of California and the third largest city in the state. Bakersfield is a center for agriculture, oil and mining industries whose resources include silver, tungsten and gypsum. Commonly manufactured products of Bakersfield include rubber, chemicals, clothing, paper, food and various pieces of electronic equipment. History:
Bakersfield was inhabited by the Yokut Indians for thousands of years before any European settlement. Father Garces, a Spanish missionary, first founded the area in 1776. In subsequent years, gold was found in the area in 1851 and later oil was discovered in 1865. The name Bakersfield was based on Col. Baker, one of the first settlers in the area. The city was officially incorporated in 1898. Bakersfield suffered several natural disasters around this period. Floods hit in 1867 and 1893 as well as major fires in 1889 and 1919.
The 20th century brought many looking for work in the area, mainly in agriculture and the oil industry. Many Mexican immigrants came to work in the city's surrounding farms. A large earthquake hit Bakersfield in 1952 which helped determine the city's layout of today. California State University of Bakersfield was opened in 1965 and currently educates thousands of college students. Tourism:
Meadows Field Airport services the city and is located six miles outside of Bakersfield. There are no major professional sports teams in the city, although many of Bakersfield's colleges have various teams and there are some minor league teams in the city. There are several aeronautics establishments in the city, most notably Edwards Air Force Base. Additionally, Bakersfield has a symphony orchestra and a major civic center that was recently renovated called "Rabobank Arena." The nearby Sequoia National Forest is also a commonly visited attraction around the city.
