The city of Pomona is a suburb of Los Angeles and is the fifth largest city in Los Angeles County. Known for its rich history and fertile lands, Pomona is home to diverse culture, beautiful beaches and a moderate southern California climate. Through the support of local universities, Pomona boasts a thriving local economy and an assortment of living conditions from its high-end lofts located Downtown and well-kept historic homes in Lincoln Park to modest apartments and single-family homes throughout the city. In 2005, Pomona's population was estimated at 160,815, with a median age of 26. With its convenient location, economic, educational, and cultural advantages, it's no wonder so many families and young professionals are moving to Pomona.

History:
Originally known as the "Urban Garden," Pomona was incorporated in 1888 and became a charter city in 1911. Recognized for its fertile soils and valley terrain, Pomona was named after the Roman goddess of fruit. Originally used as a trade route by local Native Americans, the city's' first inhabits were Gabrieleno Native Americans. In 1700, the valley became known as Ranch San Jose. A year later, the city was incorporated into the Mission San Gabriel Grazing Lands, opening the area to settlers. Pomona's name proved prophetic and its vineyards flourished, making it possible to supply the winemaking and raisin industries. Decades later, the vineyards would be replaces by citrus orchards and olive groves. As of today, the areas population continues to grow -- nearly doubling since the 1970s -- making Pomona moving companies very busy.

Economy:
Located just 25 miles east of Los Angeles (the second largest city in the country), many employment options are available both inside the city and in neighboring areas. Surrounded by large urban cities, Pomona itself remains an agricultural based economy, providing a majority of employment opportunities in the areas of manufacturing, wholesale trade, and retail sales. The education industry provides vast opportunity for employment, and currently provides 10 percent of the jobs in the city (with over five percent coming from California State Polytechnic University). According to bestplaces.net, Pomona's unemployment rate is currently at 12.2 percent; however, future job growth over the next ten years is predicted at 17 percent. In addition to the large retailers such as Wal-Mart, Verizon, and Home Depot, the city receives an annual economic boost by hosting the Los Angeles County Fair, held at the city's Pomona Raceway.

  • The city is named for Pomona, the ancient Roman goddess of fruit.
  • Pomona is the host city for the annual L.A. County Fair.
  • The city of Pomona is the fifth largest in Los Angeles County, and its median age (26) is seven years younger than the national average.
