History:
Cheyenne's origins trace back to 1867 when General Grenville M Dodge arrived in the area to survey the most practical route for the Union Pacific Railroad. The rumors of the project circulated and soon people flocked to the area. By the time the first track was laid in 1867 the area known as Crow Creek Crossing (later changed to Cheyenne) had attracted over 4,000 new migrants to the area. As the Railroad construction gangs moved on westward, Crow Creek Crossing was left with a somewhat motley collection of stay-put gamblers, saloon owners, thieves, cowboys and of course ladies of the night. On a more positive note, businessmen and bankers also found their way to Town and so began the slow process of developing a new settlement which was to become the capital of Wyoming.
Economy:
Today, the State of Wyoming itself owns several modern buildings in downtown Cheyenne. The U.S. Air Force maintains an important presence too, and in the form the F. E. Warren Air Force Base to the west of the City. Important too are the on-going roles of the railroads which represent a major economic force. Steps introduced in more recent times in an effort to diversify the local economy include the setting up of Lowe's and Wal-Mart distribution and fulfillment centers in Cheyenne. Wind energy has a natural role to play in the area which is one of the windiest parts of America, and wind turbines are becoming more common everywhere around Laramie County. Great Lakes Airline and Taco John's are both headquartered in Cheyenne.
