San Angelo is located in central Texas at the juncture of the Middle and North Concho Rivers. Summers in San Angelo are hot, with temps over 100 degrees, but with low humidity. The winters are mild and the average temps are in the 50s. It does snow occasionally but the amounts are light. San Angelo is in the middle of Texas ranching country and has a definite old-west feel to it. The city is proud of its history and heritage. There are many things to do and see there, from a bordello museum to a theater performance at their beautiful civic center. Anyone moving to San Angelo will fall in love with the modern city with the Wild West attitude.

Economy:
The median household income for San Angelo is lower than the state average. The cost of living in San Angelo is much lower than the national average. Currently, unemployment here is low at 6.4 percent. San Angelo has won awards for being a good city to start a business in, and for starting a career. Forbes Magazine called it ‘One of the Best Places for Business and Careers'. Kiplinger's named it one of the ‘Best Cities of the Next Decade' in 2010. Telecommunications is a major industry in San Angelo and Sitel has its largest call center in the world located there. Other top employers include Verizon, Ethicon and Martifer (a Portuguese wind- turbine manufacturer).

History:
Following the end of the Civil War, people began migrating west in search of places to begin a life. To protect the settlers, Fort Concho was established in the area in 1867. The town of San Angelo was established across the Concho River from the fort by Bart DeWitt and it was named for his wife. As more settlers moved to the area, San Angelo became a bustling (if somewhat lawless) trade center. The fort closed in 1889, but by then the town was well established as a ranching and trade center. When tuberculosis became a problem in the early 1900s, San Angelo became home to a well-respected treatment center. During World War II, an Army Air Corps training facility was built near San Angelo and became Goodfellow Air Force Base which is still there today. The city of San Angelo today is a bustling center for education, telecommunications, medicine and tourism.

Tourism:
Fort Concho is a national historical landmark and includes most of the original buildings that have been preserved and reconstructed. A unique and popular spot is Miss Hattie's Bordello Museum which is furnished in the same way as it was when it was a popular ‘gentlemen's club.' You can also eat at Miss Hattie's café, which used to be connected to the bordello by a tunnel. A big event in San Angelo is the annual rodeo in February. There is a lot more to do and see there, with many art galleries, cultural events and outdoor activities for just about every taste.

  • At one time, Fort Concho was home to the infamous Black Calvary regiment, the Buffalo Soldiers
