Located in the central part of Oklahoma, Edmond is a suburb of Oklahoma City. It has a population of about 81,000 people. History:
In 1887, The Sante Fe Railroad had completed its line that led from Gainesville, Texas to Illinois and the need for a watering station. One was built at the site of Edmond due to a good spring nearby. Originally called ‘Summit', the name was officially changed to Edmond in 1887. The great Oklahoma land run in 1889 created a town around the watering station. The first three legal settlers to stake claim in the land run were Col. Eddy Townsend, J. Wheeler Turner and Hardy Angelea. Edmond was home to the first grocery store, first church, first newspaper and the first school in Oklahoma. In 1890, the city was granted a two-year college and it opened in 1893. Over the years, Edmond has grown into a city with many attractions.
Tourism:
The Edmond Historical Society and Museum has exhibits relating to the origins of Edmond. You can tour Oklahoma's first territorial schoolhouse built in 1889. In May, there is the Edmond Downtown arts festival with many art exhibits, food, crafts, and fun activities. The Edmond Jazz and Blues Festival is also in May. The Edmond Farmer's Market has wonderful shopping and activities. Arcadia Lake provides all types of water fun including swimming, fishing and camping. Edmond has a restored downtown with many restaurants and shops. There is a wonderful golf course there. And of course, you can also easily reach everything Oklahoma City has to offer as well.
