History:
The original inhabitants of the region were the Menominee Native Americans. The first European settlers were mainly fur trappers who arrived in the area now known as Oshkosh in 1818. The fur trade did not do well, so the settlers established a lumber industry. The City of Oshkosh was only incorporated in 1853.The arrival of the railroad in 1859 further spurred the growth of the city and thus the construction sector boomed. By 1870 the population of Oshkosh had grown to well over 12,000 inhabitants.

By 2008 23 historic buildings of note had been listed as being in Oshkosh – among them houses, churches, the County Courthouse, schools and colleges, a fire station, a bank, an observatory and a cemetery. The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration is held annually in Oshkosh and is the biggest air show of its kind in the world. Every summer the Waterfest series of concerts is held at the outdoor leach Amphitheater. Opera lovers will enjoy performances at the Grand Opera House in downtown Oshkosh.
