History:
The first settlers in the area arrived in the early 1830s. The township itself was officially created by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature in 1834 out of what was the Plymouth Township. Initial settlements were properly planned and land was cleared for homes, farms, schools, public institutions and recreation. The city was named after a town in China due to the trade relations of United States with China at that time. Canton has always been and still is governed by a board of Trustees. In the early days, self-sustaining farming was the main source of income. The city used to have an established industry in poultry, dairy and meat. Canton was also popularly known as the "Sweet Corn Capitol of Michigan".
