History:
The first settlers in the area arrived in the early 1830s. The township itself was officially created by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature in 1834 out of what was the Plymouth Township. The city was named after a town in China due to the trade relations of United States with China at that time. Canton has always been and still is governed by a board of Trustees.
