Muncie, located in Indiana, has a population of this now revitalized city, according to the Census of 2010, is just over 70,000 inhabitants who live on a land area of just over two miles of mixed commercial and residential properties. Muncie has a moderate climate, but is prone to tornados – statistics reveal that it has higher tornado activity than that of the entire State of Indiana and is way above the average for the United States, at 210 percent.

Those moving to Muncie, will also find that Indianapolis is nearby as well as Yorktown and Selma. Transport links are good, with Delaware County Regional Airport, Carroll's Airpark Airport, Reese Airport and Diamond P. Field Airport all serving the city.

Economy:
Statistics show that the cost of living in Muncie is considerably less than the average for the United States (100), at 86.5 points.

Historically, Muncie was an industrial and manufacturing center which was fuelled by the 1880s gas boom, but most of the companies located in the city have now either moved away or simply closed down. Few remain, but those that do are able to provide employment for hundreds of workers who produce electronic equipment and machinery, car parts and metalware, glass and plastics. The Italian Brevini Power Transmission is planning to move its United States headquarters to Muncie some time in 2011.

At present, the main employers in Muncie are the health care (Ball Memorial Hospital) and education systems (Ball State University and Muncie Community Schools).

Agriculture provides some income for the city, the main crops being fruit, vegetables and soybeans; and some dairy farming.

History:
The Delaware Indians were relocated from their tribal homes to the area around Muncie in the 1770s and began establishing settlements on the White River. In 1818 the federal government of the time took possession of these villages and opened up the area for white settlers.

Tourism:
Muncie has a host of cultural venues, such as the Emens Auditorium. Antique lovers should stop in at the Off-Broadway Antique Mall in the revamped downtown sector of the city.

The Minnetrista Cultural Center is a museum which showcases the city's culture, while the Muncie Children's Museum and the Ball State University's unique orchid collection are also worth a visit.

Aviation enthusiasts will be drawn to the National Model Aviation Museum and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

  • The people of Muncie have ancestors from Germany, Native America, Ireland, England, Italy and France.
