The first people to arrive in the area were explorers and hunters. The explorers recognized the area to be rich in granite. Later when construction activity started in the surrounding towns, Lithonia became a busy place. Mining camps were set up for granite quarrying. According to local claims, the word for Lithonia comes from the Greek words ‘Litho' and ‘Onia'. The two words are said to be combined by a local school teacher somewhere in the 1840s and used to refer to the town. Apparently the name caught on among the residents and when the city was incorporated, the same name was used for official purposes.
