Spartanburg is located in the foothills of the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains, not far from some lovely beach resorts The population is around 40,000, which makes Spartanburg, South Carolina a "smaller city" but still exciting city. Those moving to Spartanburg will discover exactly what they are looking for and much more.

History:
Today, Spartanburg is a bustling and progressive city. Established as a courthouse village in the 1780s, Spartanburg (the name might have come from the Spartan Regiment of the South Carolina militia) was incorporated in 1831. A statue of General Daniel Morgan stands proudly in the City center and commemorates his victory at the Battle of Cowpens, whre he inspired the American Revolutionary Forces to re-gain South Carolina from the British on January 17, 1781. You will find plenty of other places of historical significance too when you visit Spartanburg.

Economy:
A number of new building projects have recently come on stream in Spartanburg, the 240-room Marriott for example. So too the Extended Stay Hotels group who have moved their headquarters there. Other headquarters now set up in this City include Advance America and QS/1 Data Systems who have joined already-present Denny's Restaurants and brewing business R. J. Rockers. On the industrial front, automaker BMW has an impressive plant in Spartanburg and Milliken & Company (a privately held textile and chemical manufacturer) have their international headquarters and a major research facility based in Spartanburg. Regional and county governments employ around 7,000 residents and of course local educational facilities make an important contribution in terms of local employment opportunities.

Tourism:
To the uninitiated, Spartanburg may seem like just another Hub City acting as a connecting point to other destinations, but in fact it is an eclectic city with a rich mixture of activities, events and points of interest that seem to scream out "please come here". If you like the great outdoors or history you will find plenty to discover in Spartanburg, and the Pride and Cottonwood hiking and biking trails are a good example. The Walnut Grove Plantation and Price House offer a glimpse back to the past. Spartanburg is also an important college town with several higher education facilities in its immediate area. Art and culture abound too, with splendid museums and great musical events, both indoor and outdoor, performed to perfection and aimed at attracting both resident and visitor alike. Visit the Spartanburg Convention and Visitor Center website to catch up on upcoming attractions and events – it will certainly help you plan ahead and maximize your stay in the "Hub City."

  • Spartanburg houses the oldest minor league stadium in the nation – it is called the Duncan Park Baseball Stadium.
  • The state dance is the South Carolina Shag. The origins of the Shag trace back to a mixture of black music and club dancers that evolved in Myrtle Beach probably in the early 1940s.
  • On May 23, 1788, South Carolina entered the Union as the 8th State.
