History:
Beaverton was home to the Atfaliti Native Americans before the European settlers decided to make a home of the land. After the flow of settlers of the 19th century, the area was widely referred to as "Beaverdam" because of the big bodies of water created by the beaver dams. After land claims, property was built and more people settled in the area, there was a need for a railroad to pass through the swamps and marshes. In 1893, Beaverton with a population of 400 was incorporated officially by the state.
Economy:
In December 2004, the City of Beaverton and Washington County announced a plan that will bring the city further in the scheme of Oregon cities. The "interim" plan wants to make Beaverton the second-largest city in the state. Over the next couple years, Beaverton is bringing in new businesses and trying to provide new services. Current industries in Beaverton, Oregon are Reser's Fine Foods, Leupold & Stevens, Nike, Inc., and Phoenix Technologies.
Tourism:
From the beginning of May to November, the world-renowned Beaverton Farmers Market takes place offering the best fruits and vegetables from local growers, along with the best local talent you can find. On Summer Saturdays, over 15,000 people visit the market from the 90 to 100 or so venders. Another sight to be seen is the vineyards of Cooper Mountain. The vineyards are organic and biodynamic utilizing natural pesticides of cover crops and soil with naturally occurring microorganisms.
