Part of the Provo-Orem metropolitan area, Orem, Utah is the sixth largest city in the state. The population is estimated to be above 90,000 by 2008. History:
The area was originally known as Provo Bench when it was incorporated in 1909. Later the name was changed to Orem after Walter C. Orem who was the President of the Salt Lake and Utah Electric Interurban Railroad. The Utah County itself was founded in 1852. At one time the area was also known as Sharon. The name was changed in order to attract investors to the town and make shipping easier for farmers with orchards in the area.
Tourism:
There are numerous parks in Orem. The list includes the Utah Lake State Park, the Deer Creek State Park and the Wasatch Mountain State Park. The city also has a lot of history. Visitors can go to the North American Museum of Ancient Life and UVSC Woodbury Art Museum to learn about the history and early settlements of the area. University Mall and the Mountain Shadows Shopping Centre are the main shopping locations in Orem. Orem also celebrates a number of festivals every year. The Happy Valley Film Festival brings a new life to the city and attracts scores of tourists from all over the state. The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival is also very famous and includes numerous side activities and celebrations. Sports are also played with great enthusiasm. The main teams in the area belong to the Utah Valley University who play their home matches at the campus. The city is served by the Salt Lake City International Airport.
