The major contributors in the economy are the healthcare sector, tourism, energy (primarily gas and oil), livestock and agriculture. Colorado is also known as wine country. Grand Junction is the heart of the wine industry. The Grand Valley is known for its high-quality wines and the surrounding breath-taking scenery. History:
Grand Junction has a rich history. The first tribe, known as Fremont, arrived in the area in 200 A.D. The nation lived in pit houses and lived on insects, small animals and sparse produce from their gardens. The Fremont left Western Colorado in 1300 A.D. About a hundred years later, wandering Utes arrived in the region and made much of Colorado and Utah their home. The European settlers forced these tribes from their lands in 1881. Up till 1821, the Grand Valley was part of the Spanish Kingdom and numerous Spanish explorers and trades roamed the region. There were some looking for gold, while other looking for convenient routes to Spanish California. Most of these ventures weren't successful. Despite strong anti-Indian politicians, most of Western Colorado remained Ute Territory till 1881. The area was opened to ranchers, town builders and European farmers when the Indian tribes were forcefully evicted by Army troopers.
Tourism:
Grand Junction is most popular for its wine and scenery. Tourists can visit wine-yards and try out various varieties at wineries. Then there are miles and miles of hiking trails, five public golf courses, the amazing Colorado National Monument, the interesting Western Colorado History Museum and pleasing Botanical Gardens. The city also has numerous preserved areas that reflect the colorful history of the city. There is also the Powderhorn Skii Resort that attracts a lot of tourists and the Mesa Mall which is a shopaholic's heaven. Grand Junction is also famous for its Wine-Fest, held from the 15th to 18th of September each year.
