History:
Arvada's history begins with discovering gold in a creek in the area in 1850. It was the first gold discovered in Colorado, and although that fact was disputed for many years, it was finally proved to be the site in 1995. In 1860, lots were laid out for a town by several businessmen. Benjamin Wadsworth bought land, moved his family there and made plans for a post office in 1870. His wife named the town after her Brother-in-Law. Wadsworth worked on making this a successful town, and attracted many businesses to the town. The area around Arvada was all farming, and the First World War created a need for crops, which greatly improved the area. In 1904, there were 600 residents, and there was a need for a local government to handle things like a police dept. and getting electricity to the town. After two unsuccessful attempts were made, Arvada was incorporated in 1904. The hiring of a police officer and organizing a volunteer fire dept. soon followed.
