Little Rock is the capital and the largest city in Arkansas. Located on the Arkansas River, many major corporations are headquartered in this metropolitan area. Some companies include Alltel, Dillard's Department Stores, Acxiom, Metropolitan National Bank and more. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is also one of the largest public employers in Little Rock.
Little Rock has a busy port on the Arkansas River and its economy is primarily composed of agriculture, manufacturing and transportation. The processing of agricultural products, as well as fish, beef, and lumber is common in Little Rock. The large number of employers and cultural centers in the area makes Little Rock an appealing place, which keeps local Little Rock movers busy.
History:
Little Rock was founded by Bernard de la Harpe in 1722 where a trading post was built. The land was surveyed in 1820 and the city was officially incorporated in 1831. In 1836, when Arkansas became a state, Little Rock was chosen as the state capital. During the Civil War, the Union Army was able to occupy the city of Little Rock by 1863 after winning the Battle of Little Rock.
The state capitol building in Little Rock was completed in 1911. The city was heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement. When Little Rock Central High School was integrated in 1957, there were numerous riots that broke out. U.S. Federal troops were forced to be sent into the area to allow the integration.
Tourism:
Little Rock National Airport is located nine miles from the city. There are no major professional sports teams in the city, but Little Rock does have many minor league and collegiate teams.
Museums of the city include the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, the Old State House Museum, the Arkansas Arts Center, and the Historic Arkansas Museum. Other destinations of Little Rock are the Rivermarket, Riverfront Park, and the Little Rock Zoo.
