Springfield, Missouri is the third largest city in the state and is known as the "The Queen City of the Ozarks" mountain range. For four years (from 2007-2010) Springfield has received the distinction of one of "the top 50 best places for business and careers." This ranking is determined by taking into account the cost of doing business, job growth and the average highest level of education completed by the city's residents. The city of Springfield is enjoying a downtown facelift complete with many mixed use buildings that include livable lofts, boutiques and restaurants. Springfield's most lucrative industries are currently, tourism, manufacturing, healthcare and education. The city's population is growing and major companies are taking notice. In 2008, Fed Ex announced that they would be building a new freight facility bringing with it several well-paying new jobs. In the next couple of years, Buckhorn and Kraft followed suit with their expanded facilities and added employment positions. In 2008, Springfield was ranked as the number one city in terms of job retention as well as new job opportunities. The Springfield/Branson Airport continues to see increased traffic, and new non-stop service to Los Angeles was added. Springfield was also named one of the "top cities for young professionals" by Next Generation Consultants. With all of these exciting opportunities, it's no wonder Springfield moving companies are so busy.
Tourism:
There are lots of outdoorsy things to do in Springfield. You can check out the Springfield Conservation center and enjoy hiking and bird watching. Wander through the Crystal Cave to study Native American hieroglyphics or marvel at the breathtaking Rainbow Falls. If you visit the Fantastic Caverns you will get to ride through the cave in a guided jeep – the only spot like this with a driving tour in America! You and your family will love the Dickerson Park Zoo too. For Civil War buffs, a trip to the more than 1,700 acre battlefield might be in order. This is where the first battle of Missouri was fought. Finally, you can treat yourself to the beauty of the Japanese Stroll Garden complete with a pagoda and tea house.
History:
Springfield was established in 1838. In 1848, the first railroad came into the city which increased the population grew and commercialism. The first significant battle west of the Mississippi was called the Battle of Daniel's Creek and took place just outside of Springfield on August 10, 1861. On October 25, 1861 was the First Battle of Springfield. The Union was victorious and by March of 1862, the Union had control of Missouri. In 1867, the Springfield National Cemetery was built as a final resting place for Confederate soldiers, but later Union soldiers and even soldiers from earlier wars were buried there too. That same year, the first "Wild West" style shoot-out took place in the town square between Wild Bill Hickock and Davis Tutt Jr. As you can probably guess, Wild Bill was victorious. In 1878 telephone service first came to Springfield.
