There is a rich wealth of history, culture and tradition awaiting the visitor in Independence, Missouri. Being part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area brings all the big city advantages to Independence. So if you are a planning on moving to Independence check out some great deals with our team of moving experts.

History:
Before the French and Spanish decided to explore America, the Independence area was populated by the Missouri and Osage Tribes. Ownership went to the U.S. in 1803 following the Louisiana Purchase from the French. Independence was founded in 1827 and soon established itself as an important frontier town. It was the further-most western navigable point on the Missouri River and began as a staging point for the emerging fur trade and a collection of pioneering traders. Business boomed in Independence between the late-1830s and mid-1840s as more and more hopefuls arrived in Town to seek their fortunes. Independence witnessed two major battles during the Civil War as the war took its toll. Thereafter prosperity seemed to evaporate mainly due to the town's close proximity to a fast-expanding Kansas City. President Harry S. Truman grew up in Independence and the other notable name associated with the City was that of the Latter Day Saint religious movement which was first established there.

Economy:
Independence has a variety of employers including manufacturers, health and social services, retail, construction and government and education. Insurance services, food processers and health care providers also contribute importantly to the economy. A favorable tax structure, strategic location and ample labor force make Independence an ideal place for the business world. If you are considering relocating your business to Independence, then check out all the possibilities at the Chamber of Commerce website. There certainly seems to be plenty of scope to expand.

Tourism:
"Let us amaze you" is the official motto of the Missouri Department of Tourism. Independence is proud of it role in American History, and this will be obvious to any visitor enjoying the many attractions and events promoting it. President Truman is still revered here and there are many sights and attractions dedicated to his memory. Visit the Independence Visitors Guide for a complete checklist of all the sights and attractions available in this fine City.

  • Otherwise known as the "Brothel Law" it still remains illegal for more than four unrelated persons to occupy the same dwelling in Missouri.
  • And in case that last one sounds odd, how about the law which can condemn anyone under 21 years old caught carrying even household garbage containing empty liquor containers!
  • How about this crazy one: in Missouri you may not install a bath tub with four supports depicting animal legs
