St Charles was first settled in 1765 by Louis Blanchette, a French fur trader. Under the control of the Spanish government, it was called San Carlos, but this was changed to St Charles in 1804. Following the Louisiana Purchase, which included the area, Lewis and Clark stopped in St Charles in 1804 before beginning their journey to explore the west. St Charles was the state capital from 1821 to 1826. Daniel Boone was an early resident there. From 1804 until 1956, the Katy railroad enabled passengers to travel from St Charles all the way to Galveston Texas.
