The city of Dearborn, Michigan located in Wayne County, has a long and successful association with developments in the automotive industry. Those moving to Dearborn will discover excellent job opportunities and a friendly community.

History:
The Dearborn area was inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous peoples who spoke the Algonquian, Huron and Iroquoian languages prior to European settlement in 1786, following the American Revolutionary War. Dearbornville was established in 1836, being named in honor of patriot Henry Dearborn. And then came Henry Ford. The surrounding farmland became synonymous with the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company. The village of Dearborn experienced rapid growth after 1925 and was incorporated as a City in 1927. Areas named after Henry Ford's achievements include such places as Fair Lane, Ford Motor Company and Ford airport.

Economy:
Employing more than 33,000 employees at their world headquarters in Dearborn alone, Ford Motor Company is by far the biggest employer in the area. Another significant employer in Dearborn is the Oakwood Health System with close to 6,000 employees. Of course with Ford's presence in this City there are a number of closely-related industries supplying the automaker too, such as Visteon Corporation for example. They are manufacturers of motor vehicle parts and accessories and come in third with a headcount of 4,300 employees. The Dearborn Education Board has around 2,700 people on its payroll. There are several other companies headquartered in Dearborn that are not directly connected to the automobile industry - Carhartt (clothing), Eppinger (fishing lures) and the United Airlines Detroit Reservation Center for example.

Tourism:
Want to see the chair Abraham Lincoln sat in when he was assassinated, or the limo in which John F. Kennedy was shot? They are both permanent exhibits at The Henry Ford, a Specialty Museum that simply has to be visited and is right here in Dearborn. The Automotive Hall of Fame is also dedicated to the history of the automobile and spotlights achievements of dealmakers such as Henry Ford, Louis Chevrolet and Walter P. Chrysler. Dearborn is alive with over 100 specialist annual events, major cultural and recreation centers, a veritable array of ethnic and gourmet restaurants, and plenty of trendy nightspots. Michigan's largest and oldest Memorial Day parade is held in Dearborn. Check out The City of Dearborn website for the latest information.

  • Henry Ford was born in Dearborn in 1863. After two unsuccessful attempts at producing and selling a Ford car he eventually got the investment capital and partners he needed to start the Ford Motor Company in 1903.
  • Dearborn continues to grow to this day, while many other cities world-wide try to emulate the success that this pioneering city has enjoyed down the decades.
