History:
John Daniels founded Southfield in 1823 after an 1817 survey. Early settlers were from Birmingham, Royal Oak plus some from New York State. In 1833, the first post office arrived in town and exactly forty years later townspeople commissioned their first town hall Southfield had to wait until 1942 to receive its own fire department though, with the police department following in 1953. Incorporation came about in 1958, although since the early 1950s Southfield had experienced steady expansion to meet the needs of a burgeoning commercial sector (as well as all those new residents arriving to explore fresh opportunities). Today, Southfield's core population is around 76,000 residents, with a metro-population of some five million more people.
Economy:
Southfield City forms an integral part of the economy of the metropolitan area of Detroit City. However, Southfield does have a lot going in terms of its own local economy too – take for example the 27,000,000 square feet of prime office space taken up by many well-known companies, both local and international. This actually exceeds the space available in Detroit's central business district. With more than a hundred Fortune 500 companies having offices in Southfield and a further number of internationally-recognized corporations with major offices and headquarters in the Southfield central business district, the economy of the area is well provided for, and looks set to prosper well into the future.
Tourism:
In terms of tourism, Southfield is well networked into the Detroit metropolitan area and of course it is also in close proximity to many attractions of the state of Michigan. Southfield has the busiest movie complex in the country and also boasts a very active live-jazz program featuring many well known international stars. There are also numerous arts and cultural events offered throughout the year. The art galleries have some of the finest exhibitions in Michigan with a "who is who" of the art world represented. Add in 30-plus miles of hiking, cycling and nature trails and you will soon discover that you can not only enjoy the attractions in Southfield, but you can keep fit while you do so! The City Slogan says "Southfield: The Perfect Place to Live, Work and Play".
