Located on Florida's Treasure Coast, Fort Pierce is one of the oldest communities on Florida's East Coast. The city has had a few natural disasters, in 2004 it was damaged by Hurricane Frances and Jeanne; it was then hit again the following year by Hurricane Wilma in 2005. History:
Fort Pierce is one of the oldest settlements in Florida. During the second Seminole War that broke out in 1835, the army constructed numerous military posts all over Florida. One of these forts was named after Lt. Col. Kendrick Pierce by his troops. When the war ended in 1842, the troops abandoned the fort. Dr Weeden later became the proprietor of the structures. The fort served as temporary residence for new settlers at Fort Pierce. The structures were unfortunately destroyed in a fire later. The settlement, however, continued to grow and develop. The population expanded to the current number of over 44,000 residents. Overtime modern institutions and businesses opened in the area, adding to the initially rural economy of the city. Today Fort Pierce exists as a superb residential city that has a strong heritage and excellent modern facilities.
Tourism:
Fort Pierce has numerous recreation spots in the city. The most famous is the Fort Pierce Inlet State Recreation Area which features sand dunes, swimming, fishing, biking, hiking and picnicking. Then there is the Savannah State Park which has good campsites, botanical gardens and a petting zoo. There are beautiful beaches and well-known fishing areas in the Gulf Stream and Indian River Lagoon. The Oxbow Eco-Centre offers hiking and canoe tours to visitors. Fort Pierce also has a Manatee preservation centre. The animals are known to be the origin of the myths and stories of mermaids. Golf is also popular in the area with the Indian Hills Golf Course attracting numerous enthusiasts throughout the year. The famous city of Orlando is about two hours away. Fort Pierce is served by the Palm Beach International Airport.
