Cary, North Carolina is designated as a suburb of the city of Raleigh and is largely located in Wake County, but a small part of the city is in Chatham County. The city is the 2nd largest community in Wake County and forms part of the 3rd largest municipality in what is known as The Triangle.

The population of Cary in mid-2009 was 136,600, a huge increase of 44.5 percent since 2000, which accounts for the expansion of the land area of the city. 3,245 residents live per square mile, thus the city is ranked as being of average population density.
The Cost of Living Index for Cary as at January 2011 was 94.9 points, considerably less than the national average for the United States of 100 points. Unemployment numbers released in December 2010 were Cary 5.4 percent and the state of North Carolina 9.7 percent.
The nearest large city to Cary is Raleigh, just over three miles away. Nearby towns include Morrisville, Holly Springs, Apex, Garner, Durham, Fuquay-Varina and Fearrington.
The city has three medical facilities - Western Wake Medical Center, Rex Hospital and the Dorothea Dix Hospital.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport provides air connections and there is an Amtrak station in the city.
The largest employers in Cary are the SAS Institute, which is the world's largest privately owned software company; Verizon; WakeMed; and the American Airlines Reservation Center. Other notable companies operating out of Cary are 3Dsolve which is owned by Lockheed Martin, Cotton Incorporated, Epic Games, Infineon Technologies, IntelliScanner Corporation, Lord Corporation, Dex One, Western Wake Medical Center, Deere & Company, Research In Motion (makers of Blackberry Smartphones) and Deutsche Bank Global Technologies.
History:
The first settlers arrived in the area now known as Cary in 1750 and established a township called Bradford's Ordinary. Cary was incorporated as a city in 1871.
Tourism:
Cary hosts some wonderful festivals throughout the year, some of which celebrate the diverse cultural makeup of the city. The most festive are the Lazy Daze and Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festivals; the Cary Diwali Festival of Lights; the Ritmo Latino Music, Art and Dance Festival; and the North Carolina Eid Festival.
