History:
In 1769, Ebenezer Zane explored the area and marked some trees to stake his claim. He came back the next year and, with his wife and brothers established the first settlement. In 1783, Zane laid out plots and the city was created. It was incorporated in 1836. Industry came to the area as steel and iron mills, and the city became famous for its nail production.

Wheeling is home to several golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Robert Trent Jones. The Wheeling Island Hotel Casino and Racetrack is home to Vegas-style gambling and horse racing.
