History:
The colonists of Jamestown first landed in present-day Virginia Beach in 1607. In 1634, England began to divide the land of Virginia and start to form the cities and counties that exist today. Railroads and electricity reached the city in 1888 which helped the city grow substantially. Virginia Beach was incorporated as a town in 1906 and finally a city in 1952. In 1963, the city grew substantially by merging with Princess Anne County. In 1989, the city suffered major riots and violence in what is now known as "Greekfest." When met with an unwelcoming attitude during Labor Day weekend, thousands of college students began rioting and looting and this was met with police resistance, particularly against black students. Since the incident, Virginia Beach has increased security and introduced new initiatives to make sure the incident doesn't happen again.
