History:
Scranton was first settled in the 18th century and is named after George Scranton, who helped develop the city's industry. Iron first appeared in the city at the turn of the 19th century. The economy of Scranton was heavily involved with railroads and coal-mining around this time. This brought many immigrants to the area that is still represented in Scranton today. After World War II, manufacturing and mining significantly declined in the city. This resulted in fewer jobs in Scranton which led to a declining population.

Scranton is serviced by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport which is seven miles outside of the city. There are several collegiate and minor league sports teams in the city. Museums of the city include the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science, and Art, and a mining museum. Other attractions include the Steamtown National Historic Site, a Scottish-rite cathedral, and the city's public library. Scranton is also home to an extensive parks and forest system.
