Jersey City is the second largest city in New Jersey, next to Newark. Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, across from NYC's lower Manhattan, Jersey City is considered part of the New York metropolitan area, and has been a beneficiary of New York's growing economy in recent years, keeping Jersey City movers busy. This location near Manhattan has seen an increase in the development of new housing, shopping, and eating areas.
Jersey City is a major port city that is focused around manufacturing, commerce, and finance. Chemicals, textiles, and electrics are all produced in the city. Additionally, oil is refined in the area and various railroad parts are developed. Recently, corporations including Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Charles Schwab have relocated their offices to Jersey City after the September 11th attacks.
History:
The Lenni Lenape Indians inhabited the area until Henry Hudson found the region in 1609. The Dutch then named the territory New Netherlands. Michael Pauw received a grant in 1630 to establish a settlement in the area although nothing was established until 1660. This settlement was called Communipaw, which is near today's Liberty State Park. The city was incorporated under the name Jersey City in 1838.
Over its history, many immigrants have initially landed in the city. Many went on to work in the railroad industry of the Jersey City area. Frank Hague, the Jersey City mayor from 1917 to 1947, ruled the city harshly and was able to manipulate politicians of the area during his reign. During this time period and subsequent years, Jersey City became known for corruption and this partially encouraged many citizens to leave the city for neighboring suburbs. This led to additional crime and economic difficulties. Recently, however, the city has been somewhat revitalized with new houses and corporate buildings.
Tourism:
Jersey City is serviced by Newark Liberty International Airport which is located eight miles from the city. There are no major professional sports teams in Jersey City, but collegiate and minor league teams are in the area. Notable parks of the city include Liberty State Park and Lincoln Park.
The Liberty Science Center, an interactive science museum and learning center, is located in Liberty State Park.
