History:
The area was founded in 1630 by John Winthrop. The settlement enforced strict religious rules and values. The area soon became a large trading area because of the excellent location of its port. Also during this time, the city attracted a large European immigrant population. The Great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed a large part of the city totaling over 700 buildings. Boston authors started to flourish during this time, and the city is still known for its strong literary base. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, the "Banned in Boston" movement started, where government officials prohibited publications or works that were considered offensive. In 1919, the Boston Molasses Disaster killed 21 people when they were crushed with the substance. In 1942, there was the deadliest nightclub shooting in U.S. history at Cocoanut Grove Nightclub when 492 people were killed. During the 1950's and 1960's, Boston was experiencing economic downturn.
It was not until the 1970's that the city began to boom again. The financial, academic, and health care industries all did extremely well and Boston became known for being one of the top cities for these industries.
