What Questions Should You Ask a Professional Mover Before You Hire Them?

When choosing a moving company, it is important that you take the time to ask the right questions. With the hundreds of moving companies vying for your business, the company that you hire will depend on your specific needs. Of course, it is always best to consider all your options when choosing a moving company. Here are a few questions to ask professional movers before hiring them.

Price/Estimate:
What’s this going to cost?
Contact a local moving company (phone or email) to request a quote for your move. Be sure to request quotes from several movers in your area even if the first company you contact gives you a quote below your expectations. When requesting pricing quotes, be sure to provide the movers with as much information as possible, including any unusual situations (parking challenges, road access, street accessibility, delivery time restrictions). Doing so will help the company provide you an accurate quote and eliminate unexpected charges in the future. Tip: It may also be important to inquire on the length of time your moving estimate will remain valid.

Credibility:
How has your company performed in the past?
Even more important than price is learning about the moving company’s past performance. When choosing a moving company, always check their records to see if they have a history of being late or of unsatisfactory service. Performance reports are often available for larger moving companies. Contact the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for more information. If you are working with a smaller moving company, contact your local department of consumer affairs to check for consumer complaints. Tip: Keep in mind that there are usually two sides to every story. Look for patterns of poor performance.

Availability:
Will you be available on my moving day?
Low prices and excellent references mean nothing if the moving company is unavailable on the day of your move. Be sure to communicate the day(s) you will need their services. If the company is booked on the day of your move, but you have leeway on your moving date, consider changing your planes to accommodate the movers. However, if you are on a tight schedule, or absolutely need to move on a specific day, keep in mind that availability may become a major challenge. Tip: It is best to contact moving companies at least three weeks prior to your desired moving date.

Accountability:
Who will be responsible for any damaged or lost possessions?
Before agreeing to terms with any moving company, be sure you understand the coverage for items lost or damaged during the move. There are different levels of liability that you need to be aware of. You need to understand the amount of protection provided and any additional charges that may apply. Tip: All licensed movers must provide liability and insurance for the goods they transport.

Personnel:
Who will be working on my move?
It is important to know who will be responsible for your possessions throughout the course of the move. This will not only insure you are aware of who will be handling your possessions, but also who will be working inside of your home, here are a few questions to ask:

  • Does your company subcontract its moving services - meaning will the actual move be handled by another company?
  • Will the contents of my home be on one truck the entire time or moved between trucks?
  • How many years of experience does my mover have?
