Stockton, part of San Joaquin County, is located in the central part of California. It is the twelfth largest city in California. Surrounded by the California Central Valley, Stocktan is located about 90 miles from San Francisco Bay.
In recent years, Stockton has seen a huge population boom, due to its close proximity to both San Francisco and Sacramento. Many have moved to Stockton to to take advantage of the relatively inexpensive land, keeping local Stockton movers busy.
Stockton is a center of distribution, processing, and trade. Farm products and boats are produced in the city. Agricultural crops and wine is brought into the city and then processed or distributed. Stockton has many canneries to complete the heavy processing. The city has a port in the San Joaquin Delta that facilitates trade and incoming vessels.
History
Captain Charles Weber first founded the area, but the city of Stockton is named after Commodore Robert Stockton. The city of Stockton was officially incorporated in 1850. The California Gold Rush brought the city a large influx of people. The Temple Israel Cemetery was built in 1851, and the Stockton Assembly Center was completed in 1942.
The city is currently one of the fastest growing in the United States. In fact, between 1980 and 1990, the population of Stockton increased by more than forty-two percent.
Tourism
Stockton Metropolitan Airport is eight miles from the city. Minor league baseball, hockey, and football teams are in the city as well as several collegiate teams in the Stockton area.
Notable attractions of the city include a historical museum, art gallery and civic center. Annual events of the city include the Juneteenth Festival, the Waterfest Celebration, and First Night Stockton.
