The Chupcan Indians must have revered the Monte del Diablo mountain area that they had occupied for so long, not that they knew it by this name of course. Picture the pristine rivers, verdant pastures and abundant game for their food needs and they must have been very contented. Then along came the Spanish explorers and a complete change of fortune took place - they only saw dense thickets (or "Monte" in Spanish) of willow trees blocking their passage. So unimpressed were they that they completed naming the range "del Diablo," or of the devil. Perhaps there was some curse left by the "evicted" long term tenants? History:
Prior to the arrival of Spanish explorers in 1772, the Concord area was inhabited by Chupcan Indians who shared the valley and oak-covered hills with huge herds of elk, deer, antelope and of course grizzly bears. Salmon filled the streams and the Tribe prospered for many centuries. It took a land grant in 1834 from the Mexican government to start other developments in the "Monte del Diablo" foothills. Concord started out in 1868 as Todos Santos, which means "All Saints" in Spanish, but within months the name Concord became synonymous with the area. Not much development occurred in Concord for several decades but by the end of World War II expansion was starting on an impressive scale but even so, the population by 1948 only numbered 6,500.
