History:
The area of Evanston used to be inhabited by the Potawatomis. The tribe relocated to Iowa in the 1830s. The Europeans then inhabited the area and by 1840, there were many European farmers in the region. The community was named Ridgeville in 1850. The following year, John Evans along with eight lawyers, businessmen and Methodist leaders established the Northwestern University. Instruction in the University began in 1855 and the first women students were admitted in 1869. The city of Evanston was incorporated in 1863, and was named after John Evans. Shortly after the Civil War, Evanston had a thriving economy and a significant population. A major population boost came between 1860 and 1870. The population quadrupled during this decade. Overtime, the city became known for its beautiful architecture and houses.
Tourism:
The lakefront areas in Evanston are famous both among tourists and residents. There is the Lighthouse beach, South Boulevard Beach, Clark Beach, Greenwood Beach and the Lee Street Beach. Boating is also popular in Evanston and there are facilities available on almost all beaches. Other interesting places include the Evanston History Centre, Frances Willard House and the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art. Evanston also celebrates the Evanston Lakeshore Arts Festival every year. The festival features classical and jazz music, and other family entertainment events.
