Gary is in the northwest part of Indiana and borders Lake Michigan. Gary is a city with a major port that is dominated by steel and related products. It was once one of the world leaders in steel products, but layoffs and closings have greatly diminished this industry for Gary. History:
The United States Steel Corporation founded the city in 1906 as the site of a new plant. It is named after Elbert Gary, the head of the company. Throughout its history, the city's progression has been highly correlated to the steel industry. Economical problems arose in the 1960's, mainly because of layoffs. This led to other problems such as crime and poverty. Furthermore, most of downtown Gary is now abandoned, with only remnants of the buildings and stores that were once operational.

The Gary/Chicago International Airport is four miles from the city of Gary. No major professional teams are in the city, although there are several collegiate and minor league teams. Popular destinations of Gary include a large civic center and the nearby Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
