The city of Gainesville, Georgia features over 29 square miles of land and a subtropical climate - generally having very hot and humid summers and dry, mild winters, but sharp temperature changes caused by warm and cold fronts in all seasons are a feature of the city. History:
Gainesville was established in the 1800s by settlers on the site where two Native American Indian trails bisected each other. Originally called Mule Camp Springs, the settlement was (and still is) a center of trade and transportation for close to two hundred years. In 1821, soon after Hall County had been created, Mule Camp Springs was selected as the seat of government in the area, its name was changed to Gainesville and the city was incorporated.
Tourism:
Lake Lanier is the center of recreation in Gainesville, with golf course, trails, a water park, camping facilities and accommodation available along the 540 miles of its shoreline. The Appalachian Trail is a not to be missed excursion for nature loving tourists to the area, with hikes in the Chattahoochee National Forest and along mountain ridges with wonderful views all around. It is advised not to hike this route in March and April; and September and October, when it is over crowded, while July and August may be too humid and hot.
A trip to Gainesville in autumn is well worth the trouble in getting there, as the changing colors of the leaves is an unforgettable sight.
