History
Sweden and Finland first came to the Wilmington area in 1638. The Dutch gained control of the area in 1655, but shortly after the area went under British rule. A powder mill was built in the city by Du Pont in 1802. The city was officially incorporated in 1832.
Tourism
New Castle County Airport is located seven miles from the city. There are no major professional sports teams in the area, but several collegiate and minor league teams exist in the area.
Popular destinations in Wilmington include the Old Swedes Church, Rodney Square, the Delaware Art Center, the Riverfront Arts Center, and the Hagley and Winterthur museums. Other notable sites include the Grand Opera House, Old Swedes Church, Riverfront Market, Brandywine Zoo, and several parks / recreation centers.
