Paterson is in the northeast part of New Jersey, and is the state's third largest city. Paterson is located in Passaic County. The city was the first in the country to be a planned industrial center and still is focused on manufacturing today. Paterson today is a diverse location featuring many ethnic groups from all over the world; it is also the second most densely populated cities, next to New York City. Many continue to move to Paterson, for its proximity to both New York City and Philadelphia, keeping local Paterson movers busy.
Paterson was initially the first industrial planned city in the country. Originally, textiles, silk, and transportation production were the dominant industries in the city. Today, additional industries in Paterson include electronics, paper, food, metals, and plastics.
History
Paterson was founded in 1791 by a group including Alexander Hamilton who wanted to establish an industrial city to advance manufacturing in the United States. In the next few years cotton-spinning mills came into the city which advanced the textile industry of Paterson. In the mid 1800's, silk was introduced into Paterson which created a great boom for the city. The city would soon be labeled the "Silk City of the World." By the 1880's, the iron produced in the city was used for locomotive production. Aeronautics production in Paterson grew after World War I. Over the years, Paterson was a hotbed for improving labor conditions.
Tourism
Paterson is sixteen miles from the Newark Liberty International Airport. The most notable part of the city is the historic district which features numerous buildings of the golden industrial age of the city as well as the large Passaic waterfall. Particular buildings of note in Paterson include the Colt gun factory, among several other historic factories, mills, and bridges.
