Moving to Louisiana

The state's location at the mouth of the Mississippi River has played a vital role in the state's development. Origin of State's: Louisiana (La Louisianne) was named by explorer René-Robert Cavelier in the mid 1600's to honor King Louis XIV of France. President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from Napoleon in 1803.

Capital City: Situated on the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge represents the best of Louisiana's vibrant culture. The state capital, Baton Rouge is a booming city that is home to LSU, Southern University and numerous businesses and industrial facilities. Known for its engaging people, unique eateries and lively music, Red Stick offers something for everyone.

Population: Louisiana's population is estimated at 4.5 million residents.

State Bird: The brown pelican is Louisiana's official bird. Pelicans are famous for their large bill, the lower portion of which has a pouch that can be greatly extended.

Tree: The state tree is the bald cypress. Its shape, which varies from columnar to conical (bottle-shaped), depends greatly on the amount and duration of flooding in the area.

State Flower: The large, creamy-white bloom of the magnolia tree was designated the state flower in 1900 because of its abundance throughout the state.

State Song: Written by Doralice Fontane, "Give Me Louisiana" is the official state song.
