Columbus, Ohio

As the largest city and the state capital of Ohio, Columbus was founded in 1812, and is located at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. The region has a humid continental climate typically with hot, muggy summers and cold dry winters and a plethora of storage facilities to meet your needs. A record high of 41 degrees centigrade in the 1930s contrasted starkly with the bone-jarring temperature of -30 degrees centigrade experienced by the City in January 1994.

Economy:
You may well decide to move to Columbus when you learn that it has a strong but diverse economy mainly based on education, fashion, defense, aviation and the financial world. It was recently ranked as one of the 10 best big cities in the country. Columbus was not as badly affected by the world-wide recession which began in 2007 either thanks mainly to its diversification of economic activity begun many decades ago. As State Capital, Columbus also has a large government presence in the city, making this sector the biggest employer.

History:
Once known as "Cowtown," modern Columbus has emerged as a truly global City named in honor of Christopher Columbus. In 1850 the Columbus and Xenia Railroad was the first railroad to enter the Columbus followed a year later by the Cleveland/Columbus/Cincinnati network. After taking eighteen years to construct, the Ohio Statehouse built in Columbus opened to the public. Following the end of World War I, Columbus's economy received a boost with a construction boom during the 1920s, and the City faired better than its Rust Belt neighbors during the years of The Great Depression. With the arrival of interstate highways came the rapid development of new suburbs in central Ohio. Columbus adopted a policy of combining suburban sewer and water hookups which led to the City becoming Ohio's largest urban area by virtue of population size and land. In recent decades, efforts to revitalize downtown Columbus have met with success and in the 1970s high-rise offices sprang up again in the central area.
