History:

The population increase provoked a name change to Kansas City, and the extending of city limits both south and east. The year 1933 brought epic violence, and it was in the midst of this violence that Kansas City jazz was born. After World War II, the city experienced considerable decline, as wealthy residents left for suburbs. Many of the city's characteristics present today, took shape after the race riots of the 1960s. During this time, slums were beginning to spring up in the inner city, and many of Kansas City residents who could afford to leave, left for the suburbs.
