History:
Ute, Cheyenne, Kiowa and Arapahoe Indians originally occupied the area around Colorado Springs. In 1871, William J. Palmer, who hailed from Pennsylvania, came to the site where Colorado Springs would be. Within a year, he founded Colorado Springs and established the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. Palmer basically gave life to Colorado Springs, planning out streets and distributing lands for schools and churches. He desired to have the city as a resort destination.

Colorado Springs turned into a leading mining exchange center during the Gold Rush in the 1890s because of its close proximity to Cripple Creek, a mining town. It was called the "City of Millionaires," for 35 percent of the nation's millionaires resided there. One of them was Spencer Penrose, who helped shape the country. He donated land for the community and built highways and hotels, contributing to the flourishing of Colorado Springs. By the 1940s, the first military installation was built: Fort Carson. This would start the appearance of military bases in the area, which are responsible for a huge chunk of Colorado Springs' economic growth.

Tourism:
The spectacular view nearby Pikes Peak draws millions of tourists to Colorado Springs annually. The wonderful rock formations of Garden of The Gods Park are another tourist destination, as well as the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. In terms of manmade attractions, The Air Force Academy gathers the most visitors. The Miramont Castle and The U.S. Olympic Complex are magnets for tourists as well. The city's downtown provides a wonderful destination during the day, with parks and shops. At night, party places like Rum Bay start popping around downtown. Having its own airport, the city is easily accessible to tourist and those moving to Colorado Springs.

  • The use of fluoride to help prevent tooth decay began in the Colorado Springs area. Dr. Frederick McKay of Colorado Springs was studying the "Colorado Stain" that was found on teeth of folks drinking lots of spring water from the area. In 1909, he discovered the connection with fluoride in water being able to prevent tooth decay.

  • The television shows "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and the "Stargate" series "Stargate SG-1", and the film "WarGames" were all set in Colorado Springs.

  • Colorado Springs has been home to a number of famous artists, including actor Lon Chaney, Sr., members of the band One Republic, "Peanuts" creator Charles M. Schulz, and athletes, including Baseball Hall of Fame member Goose Gossage and NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry.
