May 8, 2012 - Deciding to hire
moving services can help reduce the stress brought on when relocating, and selecting the right moving company should be just as easy. Yahoo columnist Lynne Monton offers advice on what questions those moving should ask when selecting a
moving company.
According to Monton, asking if the estimate provided is binding or non-binding can be helpful when determining a budget for the move. A non-binding estimate can change based on the weight of what is being moved, while by law, the 110 percent rule says movers can not charge more than 10 percent more than the estimate.
Hidden charges and additional fees for factors such as stairs can increase the price of service, so the columnist suggests asking about the extra expenses. Some companies may increase their price depending on the day or the week of even time of day, so asking about rates can help ensure homeowners are getting the best deal.
Finding out what liability the company takes on for lost or damaged items during the move can also be crucial when comparing moving services. Monton notes that many companies won't be liable if customers pack their own belongings, while additional protection or insurance may be available for purchase.
