Moving Out Cleaning Tips

Moving out of your old home in to a new one can bring a mixed bag of emotions – happiness, excitement and maybe even a bit of sadness, especially if you have a lot of good memories in the home you’re moving out of. However, when packing your things for moving, you will also have to clean out your old place. If you’re selling a home, it’s a good idea to clean it and get it ready for the new owners (and so you can get it ready for a new family to create new memories) or if you’re renting, you should do it to get your security deposit back. So, here are some cleaning tips that you will have to tackle before the long distance movers come to take away your belongings:

Bedrooms:
Once you’ve removed all your furniture and belongings, it’s time to get it clean. Start with the walls. Hopefully you haven’t left and visible marks or scars, and if it’s just a little dirt, you can easily clean it off with a damp sponge and some elbow grease. If you did put up pictures and shelves, you may need the help of a professional moving services agent or some extra tools to help you clean it up.

Next – your floors. If you have wooden floors, all you may need to do it sweep it clean and make sure there’s no visible dirt. If you want to add a bit of shine to it, then you can use some wood polisher and a buffing cloth. There may be some stick residues (especially on the corners) and you may need a special cleaner and a mop or sponge. If you have wall to wall carpeting, hopefully you’ve kept it stain-free and all you have to do is vacuum. If you do have stain, you may need professional help or just a powerful stain remover. You can also go to your local home store and rent your own professional carpet cleaning machine, if your carpets are especially dirty or if your landlord is difficult.

Bathroom and Kitchen:
Wipe all your surfaces down with a sponge and bathroom cleanser or make your own cleanser with some water and bleach or 2 parts water to one part vinegar. Mop up the floor as well. Don’t forget these areas – behind the toilet, door frame, bathroom/kitchen fixtures, etc. Check your grouts and tiles – if they’re looking particularly grubby, use a scrub brush and a grout cleaner. Don’t forget to clean the toilet – inside and out.

Living Room:
The same tips apply for your floors – vacuum and clean carpets, mop and sweep hardwood floors and tiles. If you have shelves and cabinets, wipe these inside and out, including the handles. If you have some living room furniture provided by the landlord, don’t forget to clean them too – wipe down the TV, vacuum the couch and the cushions, wash rugs. With these cleaning out tips, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free local moving experience.
