History:
Cincinnati was founded in 1788. The City became the first boomtown in the American heartland in the early nineteenth century, even rivaling the larger coastal cities. It developed with less European immigration influence as some coastal cities had, which gave it some right to claim to being the first really "American City." As the emphasis changed from river transport to railroad transportation Cincinnati's growth slowed somewhat and the City was overtaken by interest in many other inland Midwest cities, particularly Chicago. Cincinnati survived the Great Depression better than most other big cities around the country – largely down to the resurgence in river trade, which remained the less expensive transport option compared to rail. During the 1920s the downtown area of Cincinnati received a boost with the construction of the post office building and also the completion of the Bell telephone building. The 1937 flood proved one of the worst in the nation's history and led to the building of protective floodwalls and levees. The 1970s saw a resurgence of the inner City with the completion of the Riverfront Stadium and the Riverfront Coliseum. 1988 was the 200th anniversary of the City's founding and led to the unveiling of the Year 2000 plan, which involved further revitalization. The Banks developmentis currently in the planning stage and aims to bring about a 24-hour urban neighborhood along the City's riverfront, including restaurants, clubs, offices and homes with stunning skyline views.
